Hood: Outlaws & Legends Publications on Xbox Series X | S and Xbox One on May 10, 2021. The PvPvE multiplayer game just revealed a gameplay trailer and opened pre-orders on the Xbox Store. Now is the perfect time to dive a little deeper into the core gameplay elements of a medieval heist.
When we started designing the goals for our Showcase game mode, we took inspiration from the best heist films. The shared narrative almost always focused on the three distinct phases: putting the team together to execute the “perfect” plan, the calm approach to breaking through the vault, and then the exhilarating (and usually loud!) Finale the team got away with Prey.
From a playful perspective, these phases fit together perfectly, as they require different skills and tactics depending on the current goal and team composition. While stealth is a key component of the game, it’s not something we impose on players. Rather, the use of stealth is often the most optimal way to play as it gives your characters special skills in every silent assassination you carry out and travels through the environment to your destination without having to face a patrol of alerted guards. It’s also a better strategy if you want to avoid giving your position to the opposing team.
Infiltrate the fortress
A stealthy approach is also the best way to get your hands on that treasure vault key. Once you’ve put your team together, you’ll be given a map showing the sheriff’s patrol path. This mountain of people is a heavily armored, almost unstoppable enemy. Can kill you instantly if you are unlucky enough to get his attention. The best approach to this goal is to take out any guards nearby before silently sneaking behind the sheriff and stealing the vault key from his belt. By hiding bushes and using access points off the main path, you can definitely achieve this without escalating the situation. However, you will still need to keep an eye out for the other outlaw team as they have the same goal.
Unlock the vault
With the vault key in your possession, it is time for your team to locate the treasure vault door and unlock it. The vaults are located in the closely guarded state buildings – fortresses, garrisons and churches. Each is built on multiple floors with a number of access points, some are obvious but many require a little more exploration or interaction if you want to enter without attracting attention. Both the Ranger and Hunter classes have ranged weapons that the team can use to deploy climbable ropes if you want to avoid the heavily guarded main entrances.
Once you get to the vault door, it is likely to be guarded by a state knight or guard. Attacking these enemies head-on will likely set off an alarm increasing the AI presence in that area. A better technique is to whistle or throw a stone to lure the guard away to ask for an investigation. This gives you the ability to silently murder them from behind and access the vault without triggering an alarm.
Run away with the treasure
Once your team owns the treasure chest, it’s up to you to decide where to extract it from. Choosing the best location can depend on several factors, such as: E.g .: how close you are to your home spawn, how you track what points you currently own (which your team may reappear from), the path ahead of you (which may be closely monitored by guards) and the type of coverage that the extraction point offers. If your team does not have a ranged character, it is often best to choose a zone that is more suitable for hand-to-hand combat and less prone to long-range sniper shots.
As you move into the extraction zone, you still need to consider your approach. If a state guard sees you with the treasure chest, an alarm will sound, but instead of simply escalating a region, the entire map will be locked. Once the lock has been released, there is no going back. You can expect strong resistance from the elite guards trying to prevent you from extracting the loot. You will almost certainly have given your position to the opposing team as well. Now the battle for your reward begins!
