Apple is no stranger to professional formats. In the video, it’s been quite a few years support publishers with its famous ProRES, capable of delivering incredible quality when working with professional camera files. Based on this experience, the company presented a similar bet in the field of photography a few months ago: ProRAW.
Apple ProRAW is a format created by those of Cupertino to offer photographs with minimal compression and optimal quality
As shared by iDownloadBlog, professional photographer Austin Mann posted an article on his blog comparing photos taken with the iPhone without ProRAW, and others taken with the new format. All the pictures are edited with Adobe Lightroom for iOS, an accessible program that allows a multitude of corrections.
When it comes to night photography, the Apple ProRAW is able to show much more detail In the scene. From the stars to the objects on the plane, everything looks much more true to life. Much of this is due to less image processing by the phone, which sometimes applies effects such as noise reduction too heavily.
But the ProRAW’s differences aren’t limited to details or night mode. Thanks to 14 dynamic range stops provided by Apple ProRAW, the iPhone is capable of capturing images with an incredible amount of information. And with it, photographers will be capable of true wonders, with more vivid colors than ever before and much more natural lighting.
The big “downside” is that this feature is not for everyone. As Mann points out, the fact that the iPhone is able to capture these types of files natively it will not improve all your photos magically. RAW files allow for much cleaner editing, resulting in images like those displayed by the photographer. But it is necessary to have basic notions of photographic retouching to be able to take full advantage of this functionality.
