Capcom confirms that Street Fighter 5’s upcoming DLC character Dan has been delayed from a planned 2020 release due to the pandemic.
Street Fighter 5 is fast approaching its fifth anniversary, which makes it even more impressive that Capcom continues to release new DLC for the popular fighting game. As with most games, whether new or providing post-launch content, 2020 hasn’t made game development easy. Over the summer, Capcom confirmed that the next DLC character Dan was planned for release this winter. Capcom has now updated fans regarding Dan’s new release window, with a delay of a couple of months.
In a short message to the community from Street Fighter 5 producer Shuhei Matsumoto tells fans that Capcom is working hard to deliver the next season of content. Dan was originally announced as a winter 2020 release, but now it will be delivered in February 2021, which is technically still winter, but it doesn’t fit into 2020. Still, the two-month delay is likely better than many Street Fighters. . 5 fans were expected given the recent lack of communication.
Matsumoto cites the difficulties of working from home due to COVID-19 as a developmental impact. Describes how the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the work and lifestyle of Capcom developers. Specifically, Capcom has prioritized the safety and health of the development team, as well as their families. Capcom fans should be able to understand the challenges 2020 has posed and why Capcom chose to delay Dan as a result.

While Matsumoto doesn’t say so explicitly, it can be reasonably assumed that Capcom is having similar difficulties not just with Dan, but with all of the Street Fighter 5 season 5 content. Dan was originally planned for winter 2020, with Rose in the game. Spring 2021, Oro and Akira Kazama in Summer 2021, and a mystery character in Fall 2021. It’s unclear how the new delay will affect those releases, but Season 5 may end up lasting more than just a full year.
It’s also possible that Capcom could clarify its development line to deliver the remainder of season 5 as promised. After all, Capcom may have plans for a season 6 after season 5 that can’t be easily delayed. Street Fighter 6’s release is believed to be in 2022 based on recent leaks, so Capcom will want to release as much Street Fighter 5 content as possible planned before then.
Regardless of the delay, whether it’s for Dan or any other content from season 5, Street Fighter 5 fans are likely to be understanding. This year has taken its toll on everyone, and if anyone is late, at least it’s Dan.
Street Fighter 5 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
