Already some time ago, the expensive high-end headset Audeze Mobius was able to enthuse us, that sounded good with excellent plan drivers, but bonus also shone with 3D sound and head tracking. HyperX has now launched its own variant called Orbit S in collaboration with Audeze. The same is much cheaper with 329 euros than the then almost 500 euros expensive Audeze headset. Do we have to compromise on the quality?
After long time HyperX was known for good, but rather inexpensive headsets, the manufacturer goes with the Orbit S in whole new spheres. € 329 is not really a cardboard handle, it moves on the level of high-end gaming headsets like Beyerdymanic MMX 300 or the thick chunks of the GSP series of Sennheiser. HyperX has secured the cooperation with Audeze whose Mobius headset is basically the template for the Orbit S.
But let's start with the externals. The Orbit S makes a good impression directly thanks to high-quality, matte plastic, clean processed imitation leather and subtle design in matt black with dark gray accents. Although the headset with a hefty 368 grams is not one of the lightweights, thanks to rotating ear cups and soft upholstery, the wearing comfort is still high, despite its tight fit, even for wearers of glasses.

The controls are located through the bench on the left earcups, as well as the detachable microphone port that is well positioned and pop-protected. HyperX has not lumped and missed the Orbit S a pleasing good, unidirectional microphone, which ensures clean and trouble-free voice transmission without annoying background noise.
On the left side panel are power and microphone button, on the frame then still controls for chat and play volume, mode button and a 3.5 mm jack and a USB Type-C port for connection and charging. The keys and controls are partly occupied with double functions, which you first have to memorize. Thus, the mode button turns on or off the 3D mode and provides for the calibration of the head tracking. By pressing the microphone volume control, you can switch through the three presets 7.1, Hi-Res and Stereo. Helpful is the voice announcement for the various options.
The Orbit S can be connected in different ways. Optimal is the connection via USB cable s.PC, because then all options are available. The operation via jack to mobile devices or gamepads is also possible, it should be noted that the headset must be charged. The headset can also be used via USB to PS4 and Switch, but only in stereo mode and in the case of the switch without a microphone. There are no wireless connection options, HyperX has dispensed with the BlueTooth in the Audeze Mobius. It is nice that the cable lengths are generous. The Type-C connection and charging cable is 1.5 meters long, plus a three meter USB cable and a 1.2 meter jack cable. All cables are also covered with textile and tangled so not.

The interior is full of modern technology, especially the planar magnetic drivers, which cover a frequency range of 10 to 50,000 Hz. The great advantage of the Planarreiber over conventional membranes lies in a pin-clean sound reproduction with high performance and without distortion. This has already convinced us in the Audeze Mobius and is no less popular with Orbit S. The sound of the drivers is tremendously balanced and powerful, the basses have good whims without covering mid-peaks or heights.
But not only the generally good sound quality convinced, but also the complementary goodies. Waves Nx 3D audio technology delivers the finest in rich sound. If the headset is charged (battery life about 10 hours), this is even true for all sound sources. Add to that the head tracking, which scans your head movements 1.000x per second. The effect ensures that the sound always comes out of the correct direction of the sound source when you turn your head to the side. Especially with multi-monitor setups or wide 21: 9 screens in open-world games, this effect is noticeable, but even with smaller, more subtle movements, the listening experience is significantly more realistic and directional perception is massively improved.
