Taking a look at the Forbes article “Best Chromebook to Buy by the End of 2020,” Brooke Crothers, the author of the article, says it’s best to avoid the M1-based MacBook Air.
Crothers complains that the new MacBook Airs are “overpriced”. Now you can discuss Apple’s marketing, always presenting its products as perfect items made by gods, but you can’t deny that Apple presented an absolutely exceptional product.
Basically, it only takes a little bit of internet surfing to realize how hailed article after article on the new MacBook Air M1 is by any tech journalist.
In the Forbes article, Crotthers states:
“The tech world is obsessed with the new MacBooks with Apple’s M1 processor, but Chromebooks are cheaper, more secure, and just as fast.”
Did you write your article from a Chromebook?
Okay, Chromebooks are cheaper. On this point you are right.
As for “more secure”, Chrome OS is not exactly free from Exploits Security and the Macalope (that’s me, author of this article) would say that using an operating system managed by an advertising company is inherently a risky privacy choice, so if you mean “more secure as long as you omit the ‘privacy’ then that’s debatable.
As for speed, it’s like comparing two very different things. With Chromebooks, the speed will likely depend on your internet connection. It will also mean running everything in a very different way than a local operating system. There are advantages and disadvantages to each method.
And Chromebooks run both desktop and Android apps, which a MacBook could never do.
Yes, M1 Macs only run desktop apps and iPhone and iPad apps. Many of them behave as inconsistently as Android apps on Chromebooks.
The article also states:
“… Office in Chrome gets closer to full functionality of Office on Windows every year …”
Chrome OS: every year it gets closer to fullness.
By the way, do you know which device has a full version of Office? A MacBook.
Crothers says you can get a day and a half to two days of “moderate use” on a single battery charge on a Chromebook. Jason Snell says he got nine and a half hours of video streaming battery life in Safari on a MacBook Air M1, so a day and a half of moderate use seems perfectly achievable.
There are also a slew of apps that just don’t work on Chromebooks, like Photoshop, and to run graphics-intensive games on a Chromebook you need to subscribe to Google’s game streaming platform, Stadia.
The point here is not to say “BAH! M1 BASED MACBOOKS ARE BETTER EVERYTHING!” The point is, there are reasons Chromebooks are good for some people and MacBooks are good for other people and you don’t need to generalize unsustainable about either.
Can’t we all agree that these are Windows laptops that no one should buy?
It’s a joke, obviously.
…
Seriously, this is a joke.
