Nioh 2 Director Shares the Series Will Reach a Resting Point in 2021

In an interview with Famitsu, director behind Nioh and Nioh 2 Fumihiko Yasuda shared that Team Ninja won’t be working on a new entry for the Nioh series next year, calling it a “resting point” for the franchise.

Nioh launched in 2017, which brought it’s own flavour of Dark Souls-like combat, with a unique tale to tell. The critically acclaimed title then got it’s sequel Nioh 2 which launched in March 2020, with a host of changes including creating your own character plus co-operative mode for missions. It also received more content after its launch, the latest being the DLC The First Samurai which added more challenging missions and the most formidable foes the series has seen so far. This also marks the end of the latest entry in terms to story.

The director Yasuda was asked what their keyword was for 2021, and they said it will be all about “transition”:

Year of transition. At Team Ninja, the seven years-long development of Nioh series will reach a resting point, and there are several projects that will begin full-scale development in 2021. I plan to change my development style to match my changing lifestyle and concentrate on new titles. As for me personally, I’ll try not to gain any more weight.

As for what’s next for Team Ninja that’s yet to be seen, as it looks they will be focusing on something different.

Previous Team Ninja revealed they will be releasing Nioh 1 & 2 Remasters in February 2021. For Playstation 5 players, they can pick up The Nioh Collection, which contains the Nioh Remastered version and Nioh 2 Remastered. The games will also be available separately for individual purchase as well. For PS4 and PC players, Nioh 2: The Complete Edition will be available, which will include the base game and three DLC expansions, The Tengu’s Disciple, Darkness in the Capital and The First Samurai.

Nioh 2 is currently available to play on PS4, and will be releasing on PS5 as well as PC on February 5th 2021. If you want to know what we thought of Nioh 2 be sure to check out our Nioh 2 Review: Practically Perfect.
