Steam: Starts 2021 with a new user record

Record, starts, Steam, user

For Valve and the popular PC platform Steam, the start of the new year 2021 could hardly have been more successful. A new user record was set right on New Year’s.

Not only the public holidays or vacations, but also the ongoing pandemic including lockdowns around the globe attract the players in front of the screens in droves. That was noticeable again on the PC platform Steam, which had rushed from record to record in the past few weeks – and has now gone one better.

Right at the start of the new year, the record of simultaneous users on Steam was broken after it was raised to a new high several times in 2020. At the New Year, the service cracked a previously unattained fabulous mark: For the first time, more than 25 million users were active simultaneously on Steam! Exactly 25,415,080 gamers cavorted on Steam at peak time.

Above all, the players continued to cavort in the well-known and immensely successful long-running hits. Among the most played games at the time of the record were Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2 or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Despite all the criticism, Cyberpunk 2077 was also a brand new title that was way ahead. The sci-fi role-playing game had previously become the first single-player title with more than a million simultaneous users on Steam when it was released in December.

The question remains: how long will this new user record last?
