Apple’s controversial decision to remove the charger from the iPhone 12 box, and all its iPhones now, is based, according to the company, on concern for the environment.
Apple argues that we already have enough chargers in our house, and that reducing their manufacture, as well as having a lighter box, significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Many have argued that it is simply because Apple wants to make more money. However, a detailed study carried out by Counterpoint search reveals that Apple costs 21% more to make the iPhone 12 than the iPhone 11.
In other words, Apple is making less money on every iPhone sold this year, despite removing the charger from the box.
In this same study, we estimate exactly how much money Apple is saving by not putting the charger and EarPods in the box of the iPhone, and that’s quite a few.
Apple saves $ 4.2 per iPhone sold without charger
In a detailed graph, Counterpoint search show that making iPhone 12 costs $ 72.5 more than making iPhone 11. We can see how most of the components have gone up in price, and also with which Apple manages to save money, including the contents of the box.
Reducing the components of the iPhone 12’s box saves Apple $ 4.2 in total for every iPhone sold. In a way, it could helped the price of the iPhone 12 not increase too much, in the iPhone 12 Pro, it has remained unchanged.
If Apple manages to sell around 200 million iPhones in 2021, that’s more or less what analysts believe, the company could save up to $ 840 million only this year.
