The game streaming service Stadia from Google started with great expectations, but has since been more of a niche existence. SmartTV apps could, however, help the service achieve a breakthrough in the future.
Compared to traditional consoles, game streaming is still in its infancy, also because, in addition to a subscription and a powerful internet connection, hardware is often still required. In the case of Google’s Stadia streaming service, this is mostly a Chromecast stick. The fact that the service could possibly attract significantly more players in the future is due to a new SmartTV trend.
As part of the virtual CES in Las Vegas, the most important technology fair in the world, all kinds of new TV sets were presented again and in the course of this it was also made public that in future Stadia can be downloaded as a native app on various SmartTVs. External hardware in the form of a stick or similar is then no longer required for gaming. All you have to do is connect a controller to the TV and you can start with a Stadia subscription.
Above all, TV manufacturer LG has made a name for itself at CES 2021. Several devices in the 2021 TV line-up will receive a Stadia app and natively support the service. Even some older LG televisions are supposed to be given the feature by means of an update. It is still unclear to what extent Stadia Pro will then also be supported with 4K, HDR and surround sound.
LG likely won’t be the only manufacturer opening the door to Stadia. Sony has announced that the devices of the model year 2021 will be based on the Google TV operating system – and of course, Stadia should also be available on Google’s own system.
