News hardware Samsung’s Galaxy S21s are more competitive than ever with Apple iPhones
It was both the most anticipated tech announcement of the week and the one with the fewest surprises. It has been a few weeks since we knew almost everything about Samsung’s new Galaxy S21 smartphones.

We are not going to go into detail here and invite you to head over to these news if you want a detailed description of the new Galaxy S21. Remember that we are entitled to three models: the Galaxy S21, the S21 plus and the S21 Ultra. Prices range from 839 dollars for the S21 to 1,539 dollars for the S21 Ultra. The prices are high, but it’s been a while since Samsung charged prices with its Galaxy S like Apple’s iPhones. Because it must be remembered that the main competitor of the Galaxy S is the iPhone. And this year it’s even more true with the Galaxy S21.
An “adaptive” 120 Hz screen from Samsung
Technically, we have to admit that these S21s look great and offer arguments that the iPhone doesn’t. I am thinking of the “adaptive” 120Hz screen in particular, meaning the refresh rate changes based on usage. For example, when you’re watching a movie or photos, it stays at 60Hz or even lower, but drops to 120Hz when you browse or play games. Others already do, but it’s still a great idea, especially to save battery. And from that point of view, the iPhone 12 is way behind as its screen is still stuck at 60Hz.
Photo and video: the iPhone in the viewfinder
Another very important point about the Galaxy S21: The photo is the video. In terms of photo, the Galaxy S has often been a reference in the field, and only recently has the iPhone caught up. On the other hand, Apple’s smartphones were always up front in the video. This year, Samsung seems to have put the package on this aspect, especially on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. He can film in 8K and benefits from a “Director” mode, which can be used to switch from one sensor to the other in real time. For example, you can start filming with the main sensor and then switch to wide angle and then to optical zoom. It is very reminiscent of what we find on the iPhone 12 Pro.
Video games: shall we stay with Apple?
On the other hand, there’s a point where the iPhone still stays ahead in my opinion, it’s on the video games side. In terms of performance first of all: While the new Exynos chip in the Galaxy S21 looks very powerful, it’s tough to compete with the tweaking work Apple is doing on its A14 Bionic chips.. The iPhone is also always one step ahead when it comes to the game catalog, especially thanks to the very good Apple Arcade service. There are two more points where the Galaxy S21 can stand out when playing video games: the 120Hz screen for fluidity and the presence of cloud gaming services such as Stadia or Microsoft Game Pass.
Even if these Galaxy S21s aren’t revolutionary – like, ultimately, the iPhone 12 – they are definitely very attractive and I admit I can’t wait to have them in hand. Rely on us to offer you a full test asap!
