Some have criticized Apple for removing Parler, which had been used by right-wing extremists to share their insurgency dreams, from the App Store. But others believe Apple hasn’t done enough considering that this hate and commotion is also present in Telegram, which is still available on the App Store.
According to a report by Appleinsider, Ambassador Marc Ginsberg and the Safer Web Coalition (CSW) group filed a lawsuit against Apple last Sunday in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
Telegram can still be downloaded from the App Store “even though Apple knows that Telegram is used to intimidate, threaten and coerce citizens,” the lawsuit reads.
Ginsberg told Apple CEO Tim Cook in a letter last July that Telegram had engaged in “extremist violence” and therefore should not have a platform.
CSW regards Telegram as “a channel of communication for the Russian government, neo-Nazis and white nationalist groups who are spreading disinformation and racial division in the United States and Europe.”
The lawsuit wants to force Apple to take a closer look at Telegram for possible violations of the App Store’s terms of service and potentially take action similar to the ones it used against Parler.
CSW defines itself as an “independent, not-for-profit organization” committed to removing terrorist content from social media.
