The first thing to keep in mind is that there is no native WhatsApp app for the Apple Watch, so the functionality of the app on the wrist is quite limited.
For example, you won’t be able to send new messages or make other changes, but at least you will be able to reply to incoming messages through the existing iPhone functionality.
In order for you to receive WhatsApp notifications on Apple Watch, you need to enable this feature on your iPhone. In the Watch app on your iPhone, check the Messages section to see if WhatsApp is allowed to show notifications.
Being a third party app, it’s pretty low on the list. If the slider turns green, new notifications will also arrive on your Apple Watch. Meanwhile, WhatsApp on the Apple Watch can at least preview the delivered image.
Since most very private messages are sent via WhatsApp, watchOS 6 allows for some privacy. To do this, you need to activate the “Discrete messages” setting.
This can be found in the iPhone Watch app under the “Messages” tab. The setting causes the message to arrive short enough (sender and sender app) without displaying any content. It is only when the user taps the message on the clock that the content appears.
The iPhone tricks reflected in the Apple Watch already enable the basic functionality of WhatsApp messages: you can delete them without replying to them or also reply to them quickly.
If a new message arrives, the user has the choice between several gestures: A swipe to the left erases the notification, a swipe to the right and a short press opens the message, a long press on the message deletes everything WhatsApp messages starters at once.
Once the message opens, there are four options you can choose from in response. On the one hand, watchOS offers a few predefined responses: “Hello!”, “What’s wrong?”, “I’m on my way”, “OK”.
If they don’t match the situation, you can send an emoji or scribble the letters individually on the screen – watchOS recognizes them and converts them to text. However, the fastest way is dictation: thanks to voice recognition even more complex and long messages can be sent.
The main thing is that the Apple Watch is connected to the Internet, as voice recognition continues to take place on Apple’s servers. Apple promises with the current version of WatchOS local voice recognition, this so far is only intended for English and is currently not available.
If you have people in the WhatsApp contact list who speak different languages, you can switch from watchOS 7 to the desired language in the dictation response.
So far the Apple Watch has taken over the default language of the iPhone, now another option to change the language appears under the microphone icon, the Apple Watch is oriented to the keyboard languages set on the ‘iPhone paired.
