Buying and selling graphics cards has been popular on Ebay for a long time. The prices that are called there for older models have risen rapidly in the last few weeks and are currently at a record level.
This is shown by our following analysis of successfully sold GPUs in comparison between the current point in time and the prices about two months ago.
Extreme price increase: The Radeon RX 580 with 8.0 GB is an exception: it is currently changing on Ebay for an average of 77.6 percent higher costs the owner than in November.
Models from Nvidia are also affected by high price increases, especially the cards of the GTX 1000 generation such as the GTX 1060 (+ 47.7 percent) or the GTX 1070 (+ 43.7 percent).

How did we look at the used market?
Our analysis relates to various graphics cards that have been successfully sold on Ebay. On the one hand, we look at the average price of the last 30 sales, on the other hand, the first 30 sales from November 22nd.
We only consider functional and individually sold graphics cards that do not belong to the current generations of AMD (Radeon RX 6000) and Nvidia (Geforce RTX 3000). How fast the latest models are in the duel, we explain to you in the video talk:

But back to our analysis. We took a closer look at the prices of the following graphics cards on Ebay:

A look at the numbers we have determined shows that the prices for graphics cards on Ebay have increased significantly since November 2020. On average, the increase is almost 30 percent; AMD models and the GTX 1000 series from Nvidia are particularly hard hit.
Prices like years ago: While the Radeon RX 580 with 8.0 GB of VRAM was still available for around 150 dollars two months ago, it is currently almost 260 dollars. It costs practically as much as it did when it was released in 2017.
The GTX 1060 isn’t having an easy time of it either. It was transferred to a new owner a few weeks ago for around 140 dollars, now it costs almost 50 percent more at just under 210 dollars.
At the same time, Nvidia’s graphics cards of the 2000 generation and the GTX 1080 Ti are clearly less affected by rising prices. While there are quite big differences in terms of price increases for Nvidia models, almost all AMD graphics cards are in a range of around 30 percent.

What are the reasons for the high prices?
The fact that the costs are so high on the used market is probably due to the generally poor availability of graphics cards. On the other hand, the currently very high rates for crypto currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum and the miners could also play an important role:

It is also noticeable that the more affordable graphics cards up to a maximum of 300 dollars, such as the RX 580 and GTX 1060, but also the GTX 1070 and RX Vega 56 are hardest hit by the higher prices. However, this price range is generally very popular.
When is improvement in sight? Both AMD and Nvidia are assuming continued delivery problems for the new models for the next few weeks and months. We explain the reasons for this in the article »Graphics cards hardly available – the miners are just one problem of many«.
At the same time, this also means that the situation on the used market is likely to remain tense or even worsen. We do not expect the situation to ease to a certain extent until the end of 2021 at the earliest, but in this case we are particularly happy to be taught otherwise.
