Alphabet, and by extension, Google, has not only a great presence and a great impact in Europe, but in the rest of the world. In recent years, the company has continued to grow with more and more advanced products, but with major internal issues.
For more and more Alphabet workers, the situation is untenable and they want to change it towards a more ethical path. In response, they formed an employee coalition called Alpha Global, a group that includes Alphabet employees from 10 different countries.
Alpha Global: Google employees who want to be an ethical company
“Alphabet lost its commitment to ‘Don’t be mean’ a long time ago, but we didn’t. Together, we will hold Alphabet accountable. Together we will change the alphabet.
That’s how direct the message of several posts from Alphabet is, a company that brings together Google and other outside bets. More and more workers seem to disagree with the direction the company is taking, and beyond quitting their jobs and moving elsewhere, they want to fight from within to put the course on a more ethical course.
With the help of UNI Global, they created Alpha Global, a coalition of Alphabet and Google employees who want to change the business. The reason these workers fight from within is that they see Alphabet as one of the great architects of the modern working world. Although it is one of the greatest cradles of innovation, they consider that the company is also a creator of inequalities, being involved in the sexual harassment and oppression of sexual minorities and people of color.
Pursuing a more democratic alphabet seems like a complex task to accomplish, but employees remember that they’ve forced Google in the past to create a series of principles for artificial intelligence, forcing it to eliminate forced arbitrariness on purpose for cover up sexual abuse and other abuse.
Among the objectives of Alpha Global, the coalition is committed to all of this:
- Share information, develop a common strategy and support other demands as well as our collective goals.
- Collaborate with other Alphabet and Google employees to create local organizations that reflect employee values and interests.
- Fight for the rights of Alphabet’s direct employees, as well as temporary workers, salespeople and contractors.
- Use the collective voice to call on NGOs, governments, stakeholders and investors to advocate and uphold the rights of Alphabet workers.
- Call on other unions to join forces and support the movement for Alphabet and other tech companies.
For us, this seems like a big step within the company and we hope they can change the foundation of your business towards a much more ethical future.
