After months of litigation with the rights holders Wizards of the Coast, the creators of Dragonlance Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman confirmed Your new trilogy of Dungeons and Dragons novels is back. About two weeks after Weis and Hickman dropped their lawsuit against Wizards, the authors’ representatives announced that the first book in a new Dragonlance series would be published later in 2021 – although there is no guarantee that the book itself will be that year is published.
Weis and Hickman filed a lawsuit against Wizards last October. The couple alleged a breach of contract and requested a lawsuit and $ 10 million in damages. Court documents say Wizards reached out to them to reach an agreement for a new Drag onlance trilogy in 2018. The project had reportedly resulted in a completed manuscript, with two more in production. Wizards allegedly told the writers that they would no longer approve drafts, which effectively left them suspended – unable to share or benefit from their work.
Weis and Hickman representatives said the two parties have resolved their litigation but will not provide any further details on the matter.
Weis and Hickman are the original authors of The Dragonlance Chronicles, which was published in 1984 – back when Dungeons & Dragons was still owned by TSR. It takes place in the high fantasy world of Krynn and has also spawned a successful string of D&D adventures.
Del Rey Books, a reprint from Penguin Random House, will publish the new novels. The first and second books, tentatively titled Dragons of Deception and Dragons of Fate each should already be complete. The new books will feature beloved characters from the Dragonlance Chronicles while also introducing a new protagonist.
