The new high-end PC from Aldi raises a few questions from a player’s point of view.

Aldi is still offering various complete PCs until February 20, including the current top model Medion Erazer Hunter X10. In addition to the fact that the computer is already sold out, it also has problems with costs and features.

How expensive is the “high-end gaming PC” from Aldi and what does it contain? The price for the computer is 2,299 dollars. For this you get a Geforce RTX 2080 Super, a Core i9 10900K and Windows 10 Home (see also the section “Medion Erazer Hunter X10: All Components”).

On closer inspection, the calculator corresponds almost exactly to the model that Aldi brought onto the market under the same name a year ago. The only difference is the mainboard (Z490 instead of Z390) and the CPU (Core i9 10900K instead of Core i9 9900K).

The 10900K has two more cores, but this is largely irrelevant for gaming performance, as our test of the 10900K shows. You can find out which new hardware from Intel, Nvidia & Co can be expected in 2021 and what our forecast for availability will be in our latest Hardware-Podcast:

The cost is high

At that time the price was 2,599 dollars and the hard drive was 4.0 TByte larger than in the current model (1.0 TByte). Nevertheless, the Aldi PC does not correspond to what we would currently expect for a high-end computer in this price category.

This is mainly due to the fact that new graphics cards have now come onto the market. You can generally get along well with models of the last generation and the availability and prices of the RTX 3000 and RX 6000 are problematic. The latter also applies to the 2080 Super.

As a look at other providers of complete PCs shows, it is also quite possible to offer comparable performance with a current RTX 3060 Ti for less money. After all, it has a slightly higher ray tracing performance and better energy efficiency than the RTX 2080 Super.

In the following you can see the components of the Aldi PC and the prices for which they are currently available individually. In the case of the RTX 2080 Super, which is hardly available from retailers, this also includes offers on Ebay, although these are often used models.

The fact that a complete computer is above the sum of the individual prices in retail is also due to the fact that services such as assembly are added.

Potential savings for players

Especially with the CPU and the mainboard, the Aldi-PC relies on basically good high-end components, with which, however, money can be saved very well without losing a significant amount of gaming performance.

Ryzen instead of Intel: A very popular candidate is, for example, the Ryzen 5 3600 (approx. 200 dollars) in combination with a significantly cheaper AM4 mainboard (approx. 100 dollars). This duo costs less than half as much, but is still very fast, especially since the GPU rather than the CPU limits the FPS in games anyway.

If you prefer to assemble your PC yourself instead of buying a complete computer like the Aldi PC, we recommend you take a look at our purchase advice:
