When the unlockable content is just different colors of the same clothes and certain expressions, there is nothing to play for a long time.

Destroy All Stars, The latest PS5 exclusive product, landing on PS Plus in early February, is undoubtedly an interesting time. In many generations of game consoles, crashing a car into another car has always been a pleasure, so it’s no surprise that it can still bring these endorphins into your brain. Unexpectedly, the combination of car fighting and walking games can work well together, which makes AllStars a clever change in the type of arena-based car fighting. So why do I feel that I have no motivation to continue playing Lucid’s first next-generation game? There is just not enough content or unlockable content.

The core of Destroying All Stars is the dual game system of walking and jumping and smashing in the car. Your character is very agile while walking, able to run, jump, climb and run around the arena. By collecting debris (only available through biped games), you can build Breaker meters and Hero Vehicle meters-although you can also build these meters when you hit other cars. Breaker allows you to unleash power for the character on your feet, unlock temporarily available special abilities, double jump and speed increase. The Hero Vehicle instrument allows you to embody the character’s special vehicle (rather than the ordinary vehicle in the arena), and it has its own special functions. With 16 well-designed characters, each with its own unique aircraft, this is an area where the game is not lacking.

Walking is very useful, but it feels more like a means of ending, and air combat is the real meat. To pay tribute to the classic car game Wheelman in the Xbox 360/PS3 era, you can use DualSense’s right stick to tilt your vehicle forward or to the side, and since these actions have charging time, you cannot spam the attack -Timing is crucial. Destroying other players’ vehicles is the core goal, although depending on the game mode, you may also need to drop equipment tokens to score points.

In a team of eight players, there are two game modes: Carnado sees you attack your opponent first to earn equipment, then store them in the central tornado zone, and Stockpile has a similar equipment collection Mechanism, but when the car crashes, it can only release equipment, can only be picked up and walked and taken to the bank. In these two games, the more interesting thing is that its bankers make full use of the dual game style of the game.

For single players, there are two additional game modes: Mayhem is more like a simple derby round of hits, and Gridfall is the last standing game, and the arena gradually disappears. So far, Gridfall has provided the most excitement, although like all modes, it can be selected in more arenas.

Due to the lack of more cultural language, the gameplay in “Destroy All Stars” is very good, simple and fun. It is not particularly smart, I have not yet determined the true depth of the massacre, but I had a great time. But I don’t feel the attraction of continuing to play. Currently, Destruction AllStars is seriously lacking what keeps multiplayer games like this alive: unlockable equipment.

Clothing is a key part of the unlockable inventory of the game, but here is limited to color changes. You cannot unlock new equipment to decorate the character, and other customizations are limited to expressions and shouts. Most of them can be purchased with at least the currency obtained in the game, but a few are related to the single-player challenge series, and currently two of the three are real money. It is unclear whether each character will eventually get its own set of events, or whether all added characters in the future will require money to unlock.

Obviously, this kind of content is very likely to appear, and I hope there will be more arenas and game modes (I hope to try some tournaments in racing mode), but it feels very small at the moment. In a sense, AllStars is still in its infancy. Other minor irritation factors include the long waiting time for the matching match to be completed (which can be particularly annoying if you go out early in Gridfall), and slow performance when many cars hit each other on the screen at once. I hope that the former can be resolved as a priority.

Becoming a part of PS Plus will undoubtedly bring a sizable audience to Destruction AllStars. If the book is published at a price of 60/70 dollars, it will be inaudible, but keeping the audience involved will be the tricky part. I just want to spend a lot of time in the game, but it didn’t give me much in return.

Destruction AllStars is now only released for PS5 and is part of the PS Plus lineup until April 5, 2021. The publisher Sony offers a PlayStation Plus membership to play games.
