Upcoming cooperative shooting game Outlander No dedicated server for multiplayer games will be provided.

Outriders, developed by People Can Fly in Poland and issued by Square Enix, will instead rely on peer-to-peer solutions.

“When we were developing a game a few years ago, when we made a choice, we made a decision:’Well, we don’t use a dedicated server’,” Piotr Nowakowski, chief designer of Peotr Can Fly, told iGamesNews.

The studio believes that due to the limited number of players in Outrider, a dedicated server is not necessary to create a smooth multiplayer experience.

“Of course, cost is on the one hand, and technical solutions on the other,” Nowakowski explained. “Moreover, since we have a three-person cooperative, we will not be forced to have dedicated servers-the current structure will be good enough.

“We kept this in mind when we were developing the game. Dedicated servers appeared a long time ago, but we decided not to move in this direction.”

He added: “If there is a malfunction for some reason, I would say I was wrong, but for now: I would say it works for us and it should also be useful in the way we handle players.”

Outriders is an online game only. Game director Bartosz Kmita urges that the game does use dedicated servers in other areas to prevent hackers from intruding, not just for cooperatives.

“This is not a P2P game, everything is on your machine and you can hack it,” Kmita explained.

“You have to log in to play because you need to access the server. It’s basically the distribution between how many things are calculated on the server and how many things are calculated on the computer.

“Even in a game with a dedicated server, some calculations are still done on your computer, so this is about proportional. Therefore, the amount of calculation we do on the dedicated server is small, but most things are on the host get on.”

“Outriders” is scheduled to be released on Xbox One and Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC via Steam, EGS and Stadia on April 1, but will be demoed for free tomorrow on February 25.

People Can Fly stated that Outriders are essentially RPGs, and there will be no “stupid stories” of standard shooters – learn about our interview methods here.

Although the studio clearly stated that “Outriders” is not a live service game, it may still be supplemented after release and will not be “abandoned after release.”
