Regular visitors to the PlayStation digital store, better known as the PS Store, know that there they can find not only video games, but also all kinds of applications, movies and television series to watch using the PS4 and PS5 consoles. However, things are going to change very soon.
Through an official post on the official PlayStation blog, Vanessa Lee – director of the video division of Sony Interactive Entertainment – revealed a big change that we will see very soon in the store. The purchase and rental service of movies through PlayStation Store will disappear from August 31, 2021.
What is the reason behind this decision? According to Lee, the number of users using subscription streaming services on consoles – like Netflix, Hulu and Disney + – has increased tremendously. It seems that the video offering that comes straight from PlayStation was becoming redundant.
People who have already purchased movies and series through the PlayStation Store to watch on their PS4 and PS5 consoles or on mobile devices will continue to have access to them. However, it will not be possible to buy more from the date revealed. The video service on PlayStation devices will continue to be offered through third-party applications.
