Taxi Chaos: Bringing Back the Long-Lost Taxi Genre

Pedestrians and tourists, take cover as the streets become even more ruthless! Hop in the taxi and rush around town to pick up the craziest customers and drop them off asap. With Chaos taxi We wanted to bring a throwback to a classic and almost forgotten arcade genre in video game history – and now it’s available for Xbox One!

Traffic speeds through the streets, pedestrians cross the sidewalks, and passengers of all kinds are eagerly waiting for you to pick them up. Welcome to New Yellow City, a city where everyone has too many places but never enough time to get there. The team did everything in their power to create the perfect arcade city.

Just like the classics, the gameplay in Chaos taxi The focus is on picking up passengers and dropping them off at the destination of their choice. Navigate crowded streets, avoid pedestrians, and drive through the park to find the fastest way to drop them off. To bring something new, we also gave players the option to defy gravity and even jump over rooftops! The biggest challenge is finding the best shortcuts around town to go even faster and avoid running out of time.

Design new yellow city

Before the team started designing the city, we all asked ourselves, “What would be the best city to be inspired by this spiritual successor?” It wasn’t long before the legendary taxi capital New York City emerged as the obvious winner. We always start by examining key locations and city maps to decide what to include. At the same time we dive into similar titles for inspiration – in this case the classic taxi games.

We initially wanted to divide the city into two parts: a main island and a smaller island, which are connected by two bridges. The goal here was to get the player to really think about which passengers they wanted to pick up based on their destination, as a trip over the bridge could jeopardize your time limit. Next came the idea of ​​extending the bridges on a huge highway that would enclose the entire city. It would be difficult to enter, but easy to jump off. Ultimately, we let go of both ideas to focus on something new: a jumping taxi.

When we focused on the main island, a few things became very important to us. First, we wanted to bring that NYC feel to the city by including landmarks but giving them a unique little twist. Players can visit Freedom Park, Aeonian Square, Memorial Park, and many other locations (three guesses what their inspiration was). Next, we wanted to make sure the line of sight between them was clear so that players could easily find them and learn about the different routes around the city.

The next step was to add back roads to give players the ability to take even more risks and find unique short cuts. When the foundation stone was laid, we started experimenting with the jumping mechanics. What’s crazier than driving on buildings? We’ve added ramps, low buildings that you can jump straight onto, and different roofs that you can cross. Driving a taxi will never be the same again. Curious where good abbreviations are? Be on the lookout for green scaffolding on buildings, as this could be a crazy opportunity.

Passengers with a personality

Of course, it’s not all New Yellow City has to offer just driving around and jumping around. Just like it’s inspiration, it’s filled with unique citizens, each with their own story. To bring the city to life, we decided to give everyone a unique voice and dialogue. There are also various special passengers that you can pick up multiple times to get to know them a little better each time you meet them. You can pick up a hipster, plumber, rock star, and many others. Make sure to visit each rooftop as you never know who you will meet.
