It may soon be possible to increase the compatibility offered by PlayStation 5 with previous versions of the console. In other words, it would not be limited to only offering compatibility with PS4 titles, but also with PS3, PS2 and PS1 games. On March 18, a new Sony patent was published under the name of “Method and system of obtaining trophies of emulated games”.

While at first glance this patent might not seem like a great deal, it could be one of the best patents they’ve come up with. Yesterday, many were disappointed after the announcement that Sony could eliminate stores from consoles older than PlayStation 4, which could resolve this patent, thus being able to emulate games from previous versions of PlayStation on the new Sony console.

In the future, it may be possible to increase the compatibility of the PlayStation 5

While it is true that the patent does not attempt to imitate the games itself, but rather tries to establish a method of awarding trophies to players from games of other generations from PlayStation, but for this it would be necessary to emulate them, since the games of PS1 and PS2 did not have trophies.

So far, this is a patent, and as we already know, the vast majority of them remain simple ideas. Obviously, Sony has not spoken at this time, so there is no confirmation of a future plan. But of course the possibility of extending the compatibility of PlayStation 5 exists and it looks like it might be possible in the future.
