While it’s often difficult to pin down what’s coming to PS Plus, there’s enough here lately that fans can form some decent expectations.
Sometimes PS Plus seems to go in and out of pattern periods. For example, from late 2019 to early 2020, fans could easily look forward to a big AAA game and a smaller, niche game. All of this went out the window when PS Plus was used to boost PS5 excitement, but that train hasn’t slowed down either. However, it looks like PS Plus is adjusting to a nice little pattern for now.
One really only needs to look at the list of games available from January 2021 to develop expectations. Of course, these should always be kept in check, but unlike a few months, PS Plus subscribers can probably trust Sony to stick to this pattern.
First of all, fans already know that Oddworld: Soulstorm will launch on PS Plus. It will launch on April 6, and the PS5 version of the game will fill the consistent “two-month gap” that PS Plus has featured since November. It went from offering Bugsnax to Destruction AllStars and Oddworld: Soulstorm will be available during April and June. In particular, this is likely due to the fact that many are still buying PS5, as almost all restocks still sell out within minutes. While those who get a PS5 during April have missed two games so far, it’s good to see that the latecomers aren’t being forgotten.
Oddworld: Soulstorm is the latest addition to an old platform franchise. It’s both a “reinvention” of 1998 Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus and the sequel to 2014 Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! Overall, it’s a classic and new experience for many PS5 users.
The rest is a bit more difficult to pin down and not exactly close, no matter what is on the PS Plus wish list. However, broadly speaking, every month since January 2021 has adjusted to some identifiable patterns. First of all, it seems like the days of 2 games each month are long gone. That’s not to say they’re coming back, but while this pattern remains consistent, fans can expect 3-4 games in addition to the aforementioned Oddworld. That’s not even to mention the additional Play at Home Initiative, which has a ton of free games up for grabs right now.
Second, at least one of those games will be specifically for the PS5. Not counting the two-month free games, there has been one available for each month: Maneater for January, Control for February, and Maquette for March. What arrives in April remains to be seen, but fans can count on at least one additional PS5 game.
Beyond that is the nature of the games themselves. It seems that instead of targeting a big game, a small game as it has in the past, PS Plus is releasing a wide variety of games to subscribers. Only in March, for example, an action role-playing game, a virtual reality game, a puzzle game, and a third-person shooter in the form of a soul joined the service. That’s not to say that fans should expect another VR game as welcome as it would be, but fans who dabble in multiple genres will reap the most benefit.
Ultimately, everything remains to be seen. While fans shouldn’t overdo it, the best expectation fans can have is another good month of free PS Plus games.
