WhatsApp video calls from the computer, this is how they are made

Since the start of the pandemic, absolutely all messaging and video calling services and applications have grown dramatically. Now the WhatsApp video calls they are also available from computers.

Support for video calls in WhatsApp isn’t new, but until not so long ago they only allowed us to switch from mobile to mobile. In computers we have been using WhatsApp Web for years and desktop applications in Windows and Mac, but this video call feature was not available.

Last December, they announced that they are finally starting to test it in beta and as of today it is already being rolled out for all WhatsApp users. You can already do WhatsApp video calls from your computer to any contact.

WhatsApp video calls on your computer, now available

As our Omicrono colleagues report, the rollout of this feature is gradual for all users and the video call icon will appear over the next few hours. Of course, we need to make sure that we have the latest version of the WhatsApp app installed and at least the versions of Windows 10 1903 or macOS 10.13 desktop operating systems.

The operation is the classic one, the same as one would do to make video calls from the mobile: one enters the conversation with a contact and at the top right, next to the magnifying glass icon and the telephone, a new camera icon appears which, when pressed, will initiate the video call from the computer.

The app may ask us for permission to access the webcam and microphone, as is normal. A new window will then open with the video, while waiting for the other contact to “pick up”.

Of course, video calls are completely free for all WhatsApp users and the requirements are the same as always: have a stable internet connection and the mobile phone nearby also with a connection so that the activity of the desktop application WhatsApp can be maintained.

At the moment, the function is limited to video calls between two people, that is to say in individual chats. This does not work for the moment in group chats.
