Outriders: Devastator is underestimated – that’s a big mistake!

Big, Devastator, mistake, Outriders, underestimated

Not welcome on expeditions: The Devastator.
Not welcome on expeditions: The Devastator.

Shortly after the release of the loot shooter Outriders, the first class was kicked out of the team by some players on the expeditions. The reason: As a tank, the Devastator doesn’t deal enough damage compared to the other classes. That sounds plausible at first, but there is a catch.

What makes the Devastator special in Outriders?

The Devastator parries enemy attacks and, with the right skill, is an effective boss killer. He controls gravity with his abilities and creates shocking attacks. He is a class not to be despised on both the offensive and the defensive.

The tank can be adapted to different situations thanks to the various sub-classes. The “Path of the Vanquisher” is ideal for players who like to deal a lot of damage with weapons. At the same time, it grants high bonuses to kinetic damage and protection skills. In our build guide for the Devastator you will learn how to make the class the ultimate tank in solo and co-op.

What is the problem?

Anyone who takes a closer look at the Devastator and its abilities will ask why the tank is unpopular on the expeditions in Outriders. To answer this question, background knowledge about the expeditions is required. The expeditions represent the end game in Outriders. In 15 missions, players receive high-quality and unique loot. The level of difficulty of the opponents and the loot varies through a tier system.

Another factor is added to the level of difficulty: the time. The faster the expeditions are completed, the higher the chances of high-end loot. This essentially turns the expeditions into a speed run with a focus on high damage.

This is why the devastator has to fight: In his role as a tank, the devastator has a hard time on expeditions. Compared to the other classes, it deals less damage. The Devastator cannot keep up with the other three classes Technomancer, Pyromancer and Trickster in the expeditions.

This caused frustration for some players on Reddit:

The announced nerfs for the trickster and technomancer could soon be over. Specifically, it is about the so-called “Bullet Builds”: Both classes have reinforced bullets as a special ability. Those who properly skill both classes and provide armor with the appropriate mods make the character excessively strong. The Nerf was heavily discussed on Reddit. Since there is no PvP in the loot shooter, many players do not understand the Nerf.

The nerf for both classes is already live and not part of the patch. In our news about Outriders Patch 1.05 you will find out what publisher Square Enix and the developers of People Can Fly want to change and adapt in the next few weeks.

Don’t underestimate the devastator

At the beginning of Outriders, I didn’t want to play the Devastator myself. A tank? Rather not. For Elena’s Outriders Test, however, I let myself be persuaded and switched from the Pyromancer to the Devastator. At the beginning I really struggled with the class and at the beginning had difficulties using the skills in connection with armor mods. A few small changes in the class tree and adjustments to the mods I was able to make great progress with the Devastator. Not infrequently it was said: “Flo, please go ahead and pull the mobs” – said, done. And so it came about that the Devastator became my main class. However, I not only pull mobs in combat, but now also do good damage.

With the nerfs for the trickster and technomancer, the expeditions will no longer be child’s play in the future and, in my opinion, the devastator will play a decisive role in the expeditions. Don’t underestimate the class in Outriders – it can be very powerful and helpful!
