Nintendo president Furukawa Shuntaro It has been said that the company will focus more on original games and support existing IP.
Since the Switch was launched in 2017, although Nintendo has achieved significant success in focusing on Mario, Splatoon, Zelda, Animal Crossing, etc., it seems that the company is still eager to diversify its portfolio.
In an interview with the Nikkei Shimbun (thanks to VGC), Furukawa stated that Nintendo needs to be committed to creating new franchises and developing its products in order to better challenge the increasing competition from other companies such as Sony and Microsoft in the home entertainment sector.
In an interview, the president said: “As time at home increases, the scope of “entertainment” as entertainment objects is expanding.”
Games are not a necessity of life. In order for customers to choose games within a limited time, they must be fun. The competition is tough, and I am not optimistic.
“I myself am researching various forms of entertainment. In the future, we will focus on creating new game series and long-term best-selling products such as Mario and Zelda.”
When it comes to new hardware, Furukawa is a bit annoying, and it seems that he is not ready to announce any news about the rumored next-generation Switch. however.
He said: “We have been building ideas for the new game consoles that the market expects, but due to technology and cost constraints, there are some things we cannot accomplish now.”
He said: “The hardware and software development teams are in the same building, communicate closely and think about how to come up with new entertainment methods.”
“In order to create a single piece of hardware, we have to do a lot of preparatory work years in advance, so we are constantly working. Finally, the deciding factor in deciding whether to commercialize a product is whether it can create a new experience.”
Therefore, the company does not seem to be ready to release any new hardware, but this is definitely something the gaming giant has considered in the past few months.
