Amazon’s gaming efforts still don’t seem to be a lucky star. According to a new report, the ambitious online role-playing game in the universe of The Lord of the Rings has now also been discontinued.
Amazon has poured a lot of money into gaming and is still trying to get a foothold. Above all, the planned first-party games have not yet been under a good star and flopped or were discontinued – at least in the vast majority of cases. The planned online role-playing game for The Lord of the Rings joins this group.
As is well known, the company is currently pushing work on a comprehensive and epic series implementation of the material by JRR Tolkien. An ambitious MMORPG was supposed to be published to go with it, but apparently this is no longer in development.
At least that is what a new report by the renowned magazine has now put forward Bloomberg from the usually well-informed insider Jason Schreier, who was officially confirmed a little later. Accordingly, work on the game has meanwhile been stopped due to a dispute with the Chinese company Tencent.
Amazon Game Studios had worked on the MMORPG for The Lord of the Rings together with the Chinese studio Leyou Technologies Holdings since 2019. The latter was bought by the Chinese giant Tencent last December. Subsequently, the contract negotiations between Amazon and Tencent did not come to a successful conclusion, which is why the game had to be discontinued in the end.
As a result, an Amazon spokesman confirmed that they were “not in a position to guarantee the conditions to continue with this title.” And further: “We love the Lord of the Rings IP and are disappointed that we cannot bring this game to our end customers.”
The Amazon team working on the Lord of the Rings title has since been reassigned to other projects.
