It should not be a secret that Cyberpunk 2077 is a huge financial success for CD Projekt. When it was released in December 2020, the game cracked the line of over a million simultaneous players on Steam and sales broke records.
As you know, the release was fraught with many problems: Although the reviews were mostly good, many players complained about performance problems and bugs. On the PlayStation 4, the open-world role-playing game was almost unplayable.
Many unfortunate players then had the purchase price refunded – but that this was not a major financial problem for CD Projekt, as the recently published one shows Financial report of the Polish publisher.
Refunds cost over $ 50 million
As the company announced, CD Projekt “The parent company made provisions for refunds and expected adjustments to license reports in connection with the sale of Cyberpunk 2077 in its release window in the fourth quarter of 2020”.
In concrete terms, this means a somewhat complicated sentence: The studio is being affected by refunds that have already been completed, future refunds and lost sales, partly due to the unsuccessful launch and the PlayStation-Store-Dilemma are due to lose over $ 50 million.
That sounds like a lot of money at first – compared to sales, however, the loss is in the single-digit percentage range. The company was able to get one in 2020 Total sales of 563 million US-Dollar achieve. A large part of this sum is certainly due to the sales of Cyberpunk 2077. The net profit is supposed to be – despite refunds and other problems – still on $ 301 million amount to.
But even if Cyberpunk 2077 is financially a complete success, the developers must continue to work on their title – because not all problems have been solved for a long time:
