News business Epic Games Store: How Much Did the Weekly Free Games Cost?
Epic Games, currently on trial alongside Apple executives, has been talking a lot for a few hours. Thanks to this long process, which will take three good weeks, many documents that were once kept confidential ended up on the front of the stage. After the revenue from Fortnite, the cost of Borderlands 3 exclusivity on the Epic Games Store and the crossplay affair, the price of the various games that will be offered to players each week will be announced.
Shortly after the Epic Games Store opened, Epic Games, the American company behind this brand new digital store, went to great lengths to get more and more players to register on its platform. One of these great means is nothing more than creating an unbeatable offer: every week the publisher offers one or more free games in their store. Apparently, according to a document shared between Epic Games and Apple during the lawsuit, this operation comes at a cost! In fact, we learn that between December 14, 2018 and September 26, 2019, Epic Games spent more than $ 11.5 million to fulfill its free games program.
During this period, we therefore learn that it is the Warner Bros. games, and in particular the Batman Arkham license games, that cost the Epic Games Store the most: the collection was sold in the Publisher Store. American for $ 1.5 million. Subnautica brought in Unknown Worlds, the makers of the game, after Epic Games paid $ 1.4 million to bring it to its community. We learn that these two initiatives have allowed the Epic Games Store to collect a total of 613,912 and 804,052 new users, respectively. Note that other more independent titles were obtained for a dime, however. For example, RiME was bought for $ 45,000, Super Meat Boy and World of Goo for $ 50,000, and For Honor for $ 63,000!
As a reminder, while the 2K games are not on the list above – the games were offered in May of 2020 – the latter was the one that generated the most cost. Epic Games Store. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection was purchased from the Digital Store for $ 11 million, while Civilization VI sold for $ 20 million. Note that we still don’t know the price of Grand Theft Auto V. Given the success of Grand Theft Auto V, we imagine this shouldn’t have happened.
