What kind of game is Pine?

Genre: Open-World-Adventure | Developer: Twirlbound | Platform: PC | Release: October 10, 2019

The story of Pine: The game takes you into the primeval world of Albamare, which is inhabited by different tribes. In addition to human tribes, there are also intelligent animal tribes that also lay claim to the land.

You slip into the role of the human boy Hue, who grows up in a secluded tribe. After a tragedy, it is your job to find a new settlement for your own kind. In doing so, you realize for the first time that there are other communities besides your tribe and that personal interests diverge greatly.

This is what awaits you in the game world: The Pine game world consists of six different biomes. These differ not only in terms of climate, but also bring different resources to light.

There are five large factions that can settle around 25 different villages. Which faction you meet in which village depends on many dynamic factors. Villages can grow and shrink and even be conquered by other tribes. As a result, the game world – even without player influence – is constantly changing and should therefore feel lively.

How is the gameplay designed?

Disagreements cannot always be resolved peacefully in Albamare. If there is a fight, enemies can be fought at close range with sword and shield. A bow is available for long-range combat. However, the combat mechanics are kept extremely simple here – so don’t expect too much from it.

The gathering and exploitation of resources is also a core element of Pine. The gathered resources can either be used to manufacture new equipment or to trade with the various tribes. This can also increase the reputation within a faction that provides you with new blueprints for it.

To move forward in the story, you have to loot three large vaults. The vaults can be imagined as larger dungeons in which your gray matter is challenged with jump passages and puzzles. At the end of each vault a powerful artifact beckons that can help you in completing your quest. Before you can enter a vault, however, you have to complete a bunch of other missions.

Who is the game worthwhile for?

Pine bears a certain resemblance to games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, or Immortals: Fenyx Rising. If you liked these games and if you don’t expect too many complex gameplay mechanics, you might also like Pine.

The game should also be interesting for those who quickly feel overwhelmed by larger representatives of the genre and cannot finish massive open-world games due to their length.

Nevertheless, the game play is not exactly short and is definitely not designed for an evening. According to the site howlongtobeat.com the main story should be able to be mastered within 12 hours. If you also want to take the sideline activities with you, you would have a little more than 20 hours of play. The whole 100 percent of the game should be gambled through in around 27 hours.
