Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart does feel like the first “real” PS5 game

For any game console, one of the most important games may be the first-generation game, which felt completely impossible on the previous-generation hardware. For PS5, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Valley It may be that game.

This is not to beat some of the great PS5 games we have seen so far. I think Astro’s Playroom is a must-play game, and it’s free! Demon Soul is a powerful remake of the classic. Although the return journey has acquired taste, it is excellent. There are also a large number of third-party products, including cross-generation releases with greater PS5 advantages, the most recent being Resident Evil Village.

But buddy. Ratchet and jingle: Rift Apart. Oh my goodness. Although I did not have the opportunity to play the game due to various epidemic-related restrictions, I was able to watch the extended game demo and listened to a lot of comments from the developers explaining how the Insomniac Games team made the game – it felt like the game launched PS5 is required. I think this may be the first game that truly belongs to this generation and only this generation, and it is incredible.

First of all, it is worth mentioning that Ratchet & Clank fans will find many places worth visiting here. The new co-protagonist Rivet provides a new perspective, and the game seems to expand the core mechanisms and systems of the series in an interesting way, with both returning weapons and new weapons, and providing a wide range of options.

Like Spider-Man, Insomnia has a real knack for providing players with tons of tools to fight in many different ways. The same is true here. I can’t remember the number of weapons I saw. Nevertheless, during the conference call, the developers briefly pondered on some more peculiar, game-destroying weapon concepts that were unusable. This seems to be the method of the game: almost everything and the kitchen sink are in it.

However, I admit that this is not as important to me as others. I have played the Ratchet & Clank game several times in the past, but not in a religious way to discover every subtle change and increase. For this reason, when iGamesNews reviews the game, series expert Tom (and his son) will be in power. Essentially, as a technology nerd, I was previewing the technology: Wow, what technology is this.

Rift Apart is definitely built from the ground up to take advantage of everything that PS5 has to offer. 3D audio can effectively “sell” the bubbling sparks and seemingly endless particle effects of weapon shooting. So far, adaptive triggers have been used like some other examples, providing more feedback and input options. For example, when you only pull the trigger lightly instead of all the time, the firing method of some weapons will be different. Air-cushion boots can now provide realistic feedback when you ride and ride. This is a fax of your real resistance to roller skates in the real world.

However, the core of the experience as a PS5 game is the nominal rift. This is the s head of the title, but it is an impressive gore. Of course, we have seen this kind of game in games before-from “Bioshock: Infinite” to “Portal”, the idea of entering another world or another world through a hole is not new-but this The way of execution is another matter.

Basically, this is the special data flow solution that PS5 has. The designer of the insomniac explained that although this is not a true “open world” experience for Spider-Man, they input and output content in a very similar way. Even when you turn the camera, the game will immediately look out of the texture behind you, etc. Traditionally, even if the game is out of sight, the game will save nearby content in memory, so if you suddenly open the door or shake the camera, it can quickly access them. Rift Apart did not do this, but relied on the speed of the PS5 hardware to load them only when strictly needed.

This basically allows more details. Generally, the memory budget of a game depends not only on the content on the screen, but also on the content loaded off the screen. By minimizing everything that lingers in the memory, more technical resources can be filled on the screen, which actually means that every frame of Rift Apart seems to be broken from the screen. For example, this may mean more particle effects or range, but it may also mean more enemies.

Although this is certainly the closest real-time experience to a Pixar movie, it doesn’t just mean that the game is visually impressive. However, it is crucial that Insomniac stated that PS5’s technology “changed the shape and content of the game”, which means that the entire mechanism was born from this technical possibility.

Therefore, this affects the current battle and exploration, but the ultimate expression of this idea is the rift itself. Sometimes, when you look through the Rift Valley, the game will render the same world from two different angles. At other times, you are rolling in the portal, actually moving from one dense and detailed world to another, and each world is completely different.

Some planets in this adventure will appear in two different dimensions, and you need to slide back and forth between the two planets to move forward. There is no visible load, and when you switch to one size, the other size will be completely dumped out of memory, which means that there is no design compromise in keeping both worlds in memory at the same time. When the time is up, the world will be seamlessly exchanged within a few frames.

However, perhaps the most impressive example I have seen is outside the scene – in the cutscenes. The film sequence takes advantage of the wipe transition that often appears in pulp-based science fiction, and is perhaps the most famous in “Star Wars” now. It is almost impossible to perform wiping in real time using previous generation technology-instead, you will use a pre-rendered FMV. But Rift Apart can display them in real time. Basically, the PS5 can render two scenes at a time and then erase from one scene to another, and it looks… seamless and absurd.

Ultimately, this is a game you must experience for yourself. Watching video streams online, even Sony’s luxury video streams can only tell you a lot. But this is definitely better than my gossip. Scroll up and watch some new gameplay and our impressions, and then see for yourself. Of course, this feels like the first real PS5 game-it looks like a technical journey.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will be released for PS5 on June 11.
