Today I’d like to share some of the improvements we’ve made Outward on Xbox One. Yes, the game was released over two years ago, but to this day I am thrilled to say that we still have a community of players immersing themselves in the Aurai dungeons and eagerly awaiting The three brothers, the second expansion of our open-world role-playing game.
Outward was developed by Nine Dots Studio on a PC, but it was Grip who first took up the technical challenge of porting this game to consoles. It wasn’t an easy project. We wanted players to be able to move anywhere in the split screen and not always stay close. That meant that all of the outdoor areas were loaded into the console’s memory instead of loading the assets based on the location of the player. This explains why some of the textures were of a lower resolution than in large productions. When it was released, there were complaints about the quality of the graphics on Xbox compared to PC. Regardless of the context of development, these complaints were valid and heard. Grip went out of their way to patch what they could over the months that followed.
After the release of The SoroboreansThe other time we did our first expansion, we looked at the status of the console ports and concluded that more improvements were needed. So we decided to take a fresh look at the console ports. This new studio, Blitworks, sure delivered it!
Some loading times were noticeably reduced. For example, the village of Cierzo on Xbox is now about 5 seconds faster than it was. More notably, however, many textures have been increased in resolution while maintaining or, in some cases, improving the frame rate. Outward was created on a very tight budget so we could never aim for the same graphical fidelity as AAA productions like Gears of War or The Medium could. However, for developers like us, it’s so satisfying to see our games get a little closer with each optimization.
So while we understand the The three brothers It takes a while for DLC to arrive on the console. We believe the quality overhaul for the entire game is worth the wait. In addition, this revision applies to the base game so that all players can benefit from it!
This patch is available today along with the The three brothers. We hope this upgrade will bring players old and new to discover the beauty and danger of Aurai. We don’t let Outward After that, we even have plans for the new generation of consoles, so stay tuned!
