In 2009, Twitter created the verification process so that its users could request the famous blue badge that appears next to the name of verified accounts.
This little blue check mark lets other users know that the account they are following is the real one, and not someone pretending to be Elon Musk, Katy Perry, or any other famous person or brand.
But it also indicates notoriety, and a few years ago anyone wishing to get the badge could apply for it as long as they could prove their identity.
Unfortunately, this process was closed on February 26, 2018 and Twitter users have been waiting since its reopening to verify their account.
Now the social network has announced that it will reopen the process and that in a few weeks we will be able to find the option to send our request.
We explain how to get a verified Twitter account.
How to request a verified Twitter account
First of all, it is important to know that not everyone can get the blue verification badge. It is reserved for genuine, high-level, and active accounts that fall into these categories:
- government
- Companies, brands and organizations
- News organizations and journalists
- Entertainment
- Sports and games
- Activists, organizers and other influencers
If you think you are in these “high public interest” accounts (you can read the new policy for more information on these criteria), you should go to “ Settings and privacy ” to see if you have the option to make the request. As we said before, this option will appear in the coming weeks.
Once you have an action on this option to request verification, you must click on “Start request”.
On the next screen, you have to choose the category that you think best defines you.
After that, you will need to confirm your identity. This may be:
- Official identity document issued by the government (such as DNI or passport)
- Official email address corresponding to the category you choose
- Official site referring to your Twitter account
Then you can send your request. Twitter says it will let the candidate know when to wait for the decision to be made. It should be a few days later, although it may take weeks depending on the number of requests to be reviewed.
If your application is approved, the blue badge will immediately appear on your profile.
Will Twitter expand verification categories?
Yes. The company said it understands there are other types of accounts that should be eligible for this badge, and it plans to introduce more categories throughout 2021.
