We’re excited to share the very first gameplay reveal of Western forbidden horizon with you on State of Play. This unique episode features 14 minutes of never-before-seen gameplay footage captured directly from the PlayStation 5 console, plus a brief recap with Horizon Game director Mathijs de Jonge and myself.
Western forbidden horizon continues six months after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy, a machine hunter, traveled west to investigate a mysterious and deadly plague. In these unexplored lands, she will meet strange new tribes and meet ever more deadly machines. Along with old friends and new companions, she must brave this dangerous frontier to find the answers she needs to save life on Earth.
In State of Play gameplay footage, Aloy sent his loyal friend Erend to the remains of San Francisco to retrieve an important artifact. But he quickly runs into trouble, encountering a rebel faction of the Tenakth tribe – vicious fighters who have somehow gained the power to override the machines. Aloy must cross the ruins and fight several enemies to save his friend and continue his journey.
This dangerous and unknown land is full of challenges and threats, but Aloy will have new tools to help him on his way. The Pullcaster speeds up the climb, getting it out of trouble quickly; the Shieldwing allows him to descend safely from great heights (or surprise enemies from above); and with the diving mask, a whole new underwater world is open to exploration. Not to mention the big improvements to his Focus, which now shows areas that allow free climbing and gives him the ability to replace more machines for mounts or battles.
Speaking of fighting, Western forbidden horizon emphasizes tactics and choice by providing the player with a wide variety of weapons. Aloy’s trusty spear is good for close combat and allows for a new set of combos. Bows with specialized ammo types remove armor from machines to expose their weak points. Sticky Grenades can be fired from slingshots, temporarily blocking enemies. And many more, and all of them can be upgraded on a workbench.
Aloy will not only deal with human enemies. The game also features a great new selection of deadly machines: Sunwings in the sky, Clawstriders and Tremortusks on land, Snapmaws, and little burrows (but not to be underestimated) in the water. This is just the start, as many more will be revealed in the massive open world of Western forbidden horizon. You will have to be smart and creative to eliminate them all.
