Nubia’s line of gaming phones continues to grow. The Red Magic 6R was announced in China, the company’s home country, and offers a host of high-end specs in a thin and light package.

The latter is one of the main differences between the Red Magic 6 and the 6 Pro, which released worldwide in April. These devices are obviously big and bulky, but the same can’t be said for the Red Magic 6R. Its thickness is 7.8mm and it weighs 186 grams, similar to that of many smartphones Ordinary.

The 6R also abandons the typical aesthetic player to adopt a more minimalist design. Gone are the thick bezels and the original rear design; instead, you’ll find clean lines and rounded corners. However, you will need to replace the glass with a plastic one.

This sleek design doesn’t mean you compromise on performance. The Red Magic 6R uses the iconic Snapdragon 888 chipset you’ll find in the 6 and 6 Pro, a chip that supports onboard 5G. The cheapest model combines it with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, although it can be configured up to 12GB / 256GB.

With these specs, performance is almost certain to be top of the line, and Nubia specifically announces its suitability for gaming and everyday use.

They work in conjunction with the 6.67, FHD + AMOLED display, which can achieve a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz. It is identical to the Red Magic 5G and 5S 2020, and you are unlikely to notice any difference from the 165Hz 6 and 6 Pro.

All of this play is likely to drain the battery quickly, so it remains to be seen whether the 6R’s 4,200mAh cell is up to the task. It supports 30W fast charging with the adapter that comes in the box, but there is no wireless charging.

As Nubia tries to appeal to everyday consumers and gaming fans, cameras are becoming more and more important. The Red Magic 6R has a quad rear configuration, with 64 MP main, 8 MP ultra-wide, 5 MP macro, and 2 MP deep.

A camera selfie 20 MP is housed in a perforated cutout. The cameras on previous Red Magic phones were pretty average, so it will be interesting to see if Nubia has included any improvements.

The most pressing issue, however, is the price. The Red Magic 6R will start at CNY 2,999 when it launches in China in June. Information about the global launch is expected to arrive on the same dates, although it probably won’t cost the $ 386 suggested by direct currency conversions.

While it’s more appealing than the classic 6 and 6 Pro, the Red Magic 6R will likely be a contender for our array of the best gaming phones.
