Some time ago, Square Enix announced that there should also be a Dragon Quest XII, but the official registration of the next RPG offshoot was a long time coming. Now, however, the company has done its job.
To celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary, Square Enix has finally officially announced Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate after a long wait. The latest part of the RPG series is said to be significantly darker than the earlier offshoots.
Square Enix recently held a presentation for the anniversary, after all, Dragon Quest is one of the few brands that can look back on a 35-year history, alongside well-known representatives such as The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania or Metroid. The current developments within the franchise were discussed, which not only extend to consoles but also to mobile devices.
Series creator Yuhi Horii was in this context reserved to finally introduce the next main part with Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate; this was initially confirmed by means of a teaser, which you can also view here afterwards.
Although work on the new game started a few years ago, you have to be patient for tangible details until further notice. Yuhi Horii did not comment on the release date or the platforms. He just wanted to admit that the new Dragon Quest will appear noticeably more mature and therefore also darker than earlier parts of the RPG series. There should also be some changes to the iconic turn-based combat system, but no further information is available yet. In any case, the course of the game should depend heavily on the decisions of the players; the fate of the main character is the core of the new game.
In addition to Dragon Quest XII, five more parts of the series are in the works: a remake of Dragon Quest 3, a new expansion for the MMORPG Dragon Quest X, which is only available in Japan, a spin-off called Dragon Quest Treasure and other unannounced games.
