EA has confirmed that it was the subject of a significant hack of its data when hackers succeeded in seizing the source code of FIFA 21 as well as the code of the Frostbite graphics engine.

According to messages retrieved from underground hacker forums by our colleagues at Vice, hackers have 780 GB of data straight from Electronic Arts servers that they want to sell to the highest bidder.

In addition to the game’s source code and graphics engine, hackers claim to be in possession of code that is used for the game’s matchmaking and multiplayer servers.

A game that gets us hacked

This is a major security breach because the keys to the Frostbite engine could potentially change the servers of all the games they use, including Battlefield. Worse still, hackers would also have in-house development kits for proprietary applications such as EA frameworks.

Of course, one wonders if the player’s data could have been compromised, but EA wants to reassure you on this point.

We are currently investigating a break into our network that resulted in the loss of a limited amount of source code and tools. No access to player data has been detected and we have no reason to believe that player privacy has been compromised. We made security improvements after this incident and none of this should have any impact on our business.
