Phil Spencer rarely compared Xbox’s strategy with Sony’s strategy.
Xbox In just a few years, it has significantly changed its platform and content approach.under Phil SpencerThe leadership of Xbox, from losing to Sony’s PlayStation, to completely changing the game, this comparison is no longer important.
Of course, this is mainly achieved by bringing Xbox games to the PC through the console and extending the coverage of the Xbox platform to the cloud, which opens the ecosystem for millions of players who are unwilling or unable to have an Xbox game console.
In a pre-E3 briefing with members of the media (via PC Gamer), Spencer reiterated Microsoft’s commitment to this platform-agnostic strategy, and disclosed competitor Sony – although not directly named.
“We are the only platform that releases games on PC, cloud, and console at the same time,” Spencer explained. “Others brought console games to the PC many years later, not only letting people pre-purchase their hardware, but also letting them play the game on the PC a second time.”
Spencer obviously refers to Sony, and its strategy is to bring random PlayStation exclusive games to the PC many years after its debut on the console. There seems to be no obvious pattern. Spencer also keenly pointed out that Xbox’s strategy allows brands and audiences to grow and create opportunities on new platforms.
“We expanded to release our first-party games on consoles and PCs at the same time,” he said. “Last year, our first-party retail game sales on PC more than doubled. We are also one of the largest third-party publishers on Steam.”
Not only that, investing in the cloud has also brought good news to PC players who do not have the latest hardware. This is another way Spencer wants to take advantage.
“With cloud gaming, we are now able to bring these excellent AAA games to hundreds of millions of sub-spec Windows PCs that have not been able to play the popular games that everyone has seen so far.”
There is no doubt that we will see more of these products at the Xbox and Bethesda showcases this Sunday.
