How many passwords do we need to remember per day? Sometimes we don’t even know the exact answer. And although keys have been the best form of authentication to protect our information and assets so far, Apple is anticipating without passwords. Of course, that was WWDC 21, the event where the company has demonstrated this possibility to developers.
In the session titled “Move Beyond Passwords”, available on video. Apple has shown developers a preview of what a password-less future will look like with a new feature, called “Passwords on iCloud Keychain”
Beyond passwords
Apple, they pose the risk of passwords when providing one hundred percent protection of accounts. And so they started to develop their own technology. Garrett Davidson, an Apple engineer on the Authentication Experience team, said the new feature will not only be much more secure than passwords, but will also give you will allow you to authenticate with something as simple as touching or clicking.
“When you create an account with a password, there is no password to manage. You can access this account with just login and authentication via Touch ID or Face ID.
“This new feature stores a new type of credentials, called a “passkey,” on your iCloud Keychain. Passwords are WebAuthn credentials with the incredible security offered by the standard, combined with the ease of use of backing up, syncing and running on all your devices.“
Access keys currently only work with Apple devices. Apple is therefore discussing with partners from FIDO and the World Wide Web Consortium a solution that is broader than it would also allow users to remove passwords on non-Apple devices.
