Ah, i meta. Sometimes it's okay, sometimes it's bad, it's always so, it's rarely a hot topic to discuss among fans The escape (or, well, any online game), and boring for that. But when a prominent developer gets into that story, that's exciting.
What is "Meta"?
Meta is defined as "Any route to a game that passes or operates without the game's rules, uses external objects to affect the game, or exceeds the limits or environment imposed by the game". It is basically a dynamic convergence of accepted game modes, which are decided by both fans and developers by playing.
Jumps to the Blizzard forums, Overwatch & # 39; s Jeff Kaplan posted a surprisingly detailed draft for himself and his team's thoughts on the game's meta, especially regarding the repeated calls of fans that certain heroes could be excluded from playing competitive.
I have seen a lot of disc ussion about the blockade of heroes over the past few days and I wish to offer some perspective on the topic. As always, OW has a variety of ideas in mind. Thankfully, we do not have many people in the group who argue so much about this. Most of us, including myself, are reluctant to add hero bars to Overwatch. As I said before, we are not a totally anti-intellectual and we will not add them. But more than that, there are a few issues that make us want to proceed more carefully.
Some of these issues include the introduction of a "ban" culture, the fact that blocking heroes can actually make the meta worse, and that some players just need to suck it up and remember that this is a PvP game, where you will sometimes run into strategies and techniques you don't like.
What I found most interesting, however, was Kaplan's ideas about the existence of the meta itself.
As a team, we agree and understand that players want the meta to be fluid and constant. Although most players only see the meta through OWL, feedback from GM & # 39; s, streamers and YouTubers, we find that the old meta view is not good for the game.
"Meta" is a term that implies a long shadow. It is actually the reason why I stop playing The escape, years ago now, because as a player I just couldn't stand everyone keep talking about it, or trying to be a part of it, instead of just having fun and enjoying the game.
The way Kaplan calls that section sounds like a gentle reminder to people to remember that. That, the meta is actually a thing, but it's not a big deal for most players, so maybe stop listening to the beauty and worry too much about it unless you're in a position where you should.
