Software engineer and SNES ROM hacker Vitor Vilela led a team that created and published Super Mario World widescreen, a download that lets you play Nintendos Super Mario world-first Released in 1990 – on modern widescreen displays.

Crucial SMWW retains the game’s original 8: 7 pixel aspect ratio, meaning that no matter how far you stretch the display, “the screen you will see will be like what is on a real TV screen connected to the SNES.” except expanded to widescreen resolution “. ! ”

While standard 16: 9 and 16:10 monitor resolutions are supported, Vilela is also working on some other, funky aspect ratios like 2: 1 and even 21: 9 for anyone with an ultra-wide monitor.

It’s available here, but before you hurry to download it, there are a few things you need to know. First, the download link is only for SMWW, and does not contain any ROM from Super Mario world yourself. You have to find this … somewhere else.

And secondly, you need to download the emulator as well bsnes_hdsince the only way SMWW became possible because bsnes_hd allowed Vilela to increase the horizontal resolution of the game by 96 pixels from 256×224 to 352×224. Bsnes allows many other SNES games to run in widescreen mode too, albeit not in the same bespoke perfection as here (as you can see in the comparison screenshot above, just run SMW in bsnes has some framing problems).
