Sonic Mania is currently free on the Epic Games Store, and will be available to fans until July 1st. The promotion is tied to Sonic’s 30th anniversary, which is a pretty impressive run.
Sonic Mania is unique in that it is a fan-made project published by Sega and the game has been well received. Sonic Mania goes back to the style of the original Genesis platformer without being a freshen up; The game added new mechanics and some impressive level designs from the original formula.
It’s a golden era for Sonic fans. The film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently under development and seems to be more focused on Sonic and his world than the real world city of Green Hills. On July 23rd, the The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra played a symphony concert that included the entire range of jams in the Sonic series. Sonic Mania helped usher in a new era for the cool blue hedgehog so it’s nice to see more people get the chance to try it out.
