Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (Switch)
Publisher: Ubisoft / Developer: Ubisoft
75% off – was £29.99 / 39,99$, now £7.49 / 9,99$ until 27th Jun 2021
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a must have for Switch-owning fans of turn-based tactical games. More importantly, such is the style and depth on offer that it’s also ideal for those that haven’t played much of the genre, for whom ‘X-COM’ sounds like a silly acronym from a war movie. It introduces the concept in the best possible way, and then utilises its own ideas for what becomes a smart, surprising and, at times, deliciously challenging experience. Even if you don’t actually like the Rabbids, this game — and its familiar Mario cast and setting — is so good that Ubisoft’s mascots become likeable. Well, almost.

FAR: Lone Sails (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Mixtvision / Developer: Vertical
50% off – was £13.49 / 14,99$, now £6.74 / 7,49$ until 27th Jun 2021
Without saying a word, FAR: Lone Sails conveys a poignant tale of hope and perseverance, masterfully balancing style with substance for an experience that feels every bit as sublime as it looks. Sure, you could grumble about the its relative shortness, the occasionally obtuse puzzles and the very, very minor control issues, but these problems dissolve away once you’re invested in the journey. We highly recommend that you give this a spin.
The Talos Principle: Deluxe Edition (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Return Digital / Developer: Croteam
75% off – was £26.99 / 29,99$, now £6.74 / 7,49$ until 27th Jun 2021
Croteam, the creators of The Talos Principle, were previously known primarily for their silly (but fun) Serious Sam titles. The Talos Principle shows a remarkable maturity and depth of scope that’s perhaps surprising, but in a very good way. It poses interesting questions, allows the player to progress at their own pace — mostly in a non-linear fashion — and is a hugely satisfying piece of game design. Utterly entrancing and highly recommended.
Horace (Switch eShop)
Publisher: 505 Games / Developer: Paul Helman
40% off – was £10.99 / 14,99$, now £6.59 / 8,99$ until 27th Jun 2021
Horace is something very special — the only vaguely negative thing we can say about it is the fact that there are so many spectacularly brilliant indie games on Switch already vying for your attention that we fear Horace may fall somewhat by the wayside. If you have any interest in superb level design, excellent storytelling, terrific art, evocative music, great characters, hilarious situations and emotional gut-punches, Horace is a no-brainer. It’s moving without being manipulative, clever without being smug, and nostalgic without being a lazy rehash. It’s a platformer, but it’s so much more than that. Buy this.
Wandersong (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Humble Bundle / Developer: Greg Lobanov
75% off – was £17.99 / 19,99$, now £4.49 / 4,99$ until 27th Jun 2021
If you’re after a unique experience, Wandersong completely has you covered. The singing mechanic is employs works perfectly, and while it may feel a bit too easy at times, the combination of the visuals, writing, and various gameplay objectives across a generous seven-act structure make for an incredibly compelling platforming experience that you’d do well to check out.
The Last Campfire (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Hello Games / Developer: Hello Games
50% off – was £13.49 / 14,99$, now £6.74 / 7,49$ until 27th Jun 2021
The Last Campfire is an unusually freeform puzzle adventure that stuffs its six-hour playtime with conundrums of every kind. While a few puzzle designs deserve more time in the spotlight – or could support whole games by themselves – the game’s commitment to new ideas makes for a refreshing change of pace. It comes from the core creative team behind WiiWare favourite LostWinds, now with Hello Games of No Man’s Sky fame, and this delightful puzzle-stuffed adventure is proof that the developer doesn’t have to build a universe from scratch to entertain.
Hypnospace Outlaw (Switch eShop)
Publisher: No More Robots / Developer: Tendershoot
60% off – was £15.49 / 17,19$, now £6.19 / 6,87$ until 15th Jul 2021
Hypnospace Outlaw really is like nothing else out there; at once an excellent puzzle game, razor-sharp satire and meticulously crafted slice of early-internet nostalgia that you can spend hours absolutely lost in. It’s frequently hilarious stuff that’s impeccably well-written across the board, managing to successfully bring the crazy, lawless, early rush of creativity that formed the pre-Y2K era of the internet convincingly back to life. It delivers a truly extraordinary recreation of the GeoCities era of the internet that absolutely nails its ’90s aesthetic to present a living, breathing world that’s a joy to spend time browsing around, soaking up the atmosphere and reliving the anarchic early days of the internet as you slowly untangle the puzzles at the heart of its narrative.
Florence (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Annapurna Interactive / Developer: Mountains
50% off – was £4.99 / 5,49$, now £2.49 / 2,74$ until 27th Jun 2021
Florence is an evocation of the beauty, sadness and hope that comes from any human connection we make in our lives, whether with art, nature or another person. It’s a succinct and incredibly successful exploration of moments you’ll recognise from your own life, and the way it mirrors thoughts and feelings through small gameplay mechanics makes it one of the most affecting experiences we’ve enjoyed on Switch, or any other platform.
Firewatch (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Holy Field / Developer: Holy Field
70% off – was £14.99 / 19,99$, now £4.49 / 5,99$ until 27th Jun 2021
Firewatch is just as engrossing and enchanting on Switch as it was the first time around. From the warm glow of its forests in the morning summer light to the subtle tension of exploring a rocky gorge in the isolating silence of night, Shoshone National Forest is a character in its own right. With a story that’s both funny and heartbreaking – and enhanced by some brilliant performances by its two central actors – this is an essential purchase, irrespective of whether you’re playing it for the first time on Switch or simply using it as an excuse to revisit an old favourite.
Ape Out (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Return Digital / Developer: Gabe Cuzzillo
50% off – was £13.49 / 14,99$, now £6.74 / 7,49$ until 27th Jun 2021
The Nintendo eShop would be a considerably more exciting and interesting place if it were packed full of games like Ape Out. It’s a refreshingly original experience that more than deserves a place in any Switch owner’s library. Difficult, frenetic gameplay, strong art direction, and an even stronger jazz drum soundtrack make this the sort of memorable game that you’ll likely keep coming back to over and over for another few runs in arcade mode. We’d give Ape Out a strong recommendation to anyone looking for a distinct and unforgettable game for their Switch collection; it’s a bit of an acquired taste, but well worth your time.
And with the growing trend of games plummeting to mere pennies, here’s our sub-£1 / 1$ pick(s) for a super cheap game that’s worth the memory space it takes up on your Switch…
Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise (Switch eShop)
95% off – was £19.99 / 19,99$, now £0.99 / 0,99$ until 22nd Jul 2021
A point-and-click aventure game with a cool ’60s styling and an intriguing story, we missed out on reviewing Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise, although Nintendo Life readers brought it to our attention. It’s a stylish little adventure and well worth investigation if you’re a fan of non-serious secret agent puzzling with the classic (or should that be cla-shic?) James Bond flavour.
