“Conjuring 3” is already the 8th film in the horror series if you count all spin-offs. Our order reveals how you can watch the films from the Conjuring universe correctly in chronological order.
“Conjuring 3: Under the Spell of the Devil” will be shown in German cinemas from July 1, 2021. If you’d rather watch the film in the stream at home, that’s currently also possible – but only until July 4th! You can find out what you have to do in our instructions.
The “Conjuring” universe now comprises 8 films, 5 of which are spin-offs from the main series. The first “Conjuring” film introduced the creepy doll Annabelle, which would later receive three of its own creepy sticks. “Conjuring 2” showed us a gruesome nun who was also the focus of a spin-off.
Only “Llorona’s Curse” came without the previous introduction of the ghost woman, which means that its inclusion in the “Conjuring” world was a surprise for many viewers. The “Conjuring” film series is still very popular and can be continued forever by quite independent spin-offs.
In addition to the order in which the films appeared, there is also the chronological order. We present you both possible ways to watch the horror films from the “Conjuring” universe. But don’t worry: most of the “Conjuring” films have only minimal references to each other, which is why it doesn’t matter if you deviate from the “official” sequences.
Conjuring: The order after publication
Of course, you never go wrong with the order in which the films came out. Film studio Warner Bros. ultimately assumed that you would see the films as soon as they came out, so you can get through all of the parts without much confusion.
- 1. Conjuring (2013)
- 2. Annabelle (2014)
- 3. Conjuring 2 (2016)
- 4. Annabelle 2 (2017)
- 5. The Nun (2018)
- 6. Lloronas Fluch (2019)
- 7. Annabelle 3 (2019)
- 8. Conjuring 3: Under the Spell of the Devil (2021)
As already mentioned, many horror characters from the spin-offs are first introduced in “Conjuring – The Visitation” or “Conjuring 2”. This usually ends the connection between the films. So you miss this little idea if you start with “The Nun” or “Annabelle”, for example.
Conjuring: the chronological order
Due to their rather loose connection to one another, the sequence in the “Conjuring” universe plays a smaller role than in films with a clear central theme such as “Star Wars“or certain films dem Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Still, the chronological order is interesting here, as it messes up the order of appearance. So if you have enough courage for a “conjuring” marathon, then just proceed chronologically!
- 1. The Nun (1952)
- 2. Annabelle 2 (1955)
- 3. Annabelle (1967)
- 4. Conjuring (1971)
- 5. Annabelle 3 (1972)
- 6. Lloronas Fluch (1973)
- 7. Conjuring 2 (1977)
- 8. Conjuring 3: The Vampire Slayer (1981)
Unless upcoming films and spin-offs jump further into the past, we should soon expect more films that are set in the eighties. The spin-offs could also reach the present, but the main role would probably have to part with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who could not credibly portray the Warren couple as retirees.
Also the “Halloween” series offers you various opportunities to experience the iconic performances of Michael Myers again or for the first time. So you don’t run out of horror material by the time you’re done with “Conjuring”.
