On October 22, 2021, Battlefield 2042 will be the next offshoot from Electronic Arts’ successful shooter series. This time, as the name suggests, we are heading into the future, including new technologies.
More precisely, developers Dice and Nvidia donate the pioneering AI renderer DLSS, pronounced: Deep Learning Super Sampling, to the sci-fi shooter. Nvidia’s Reflex technology is also implemented. We clarify what this is all about and what it brings us.

What is DLSS? – Nvidia’s new anti-aliasing explained in detail
With deep learning super sampling, AI algorithms based on neural networks (NGX) are trained in Nvidia’s data centers to display low-resolution images in a higher resolution. Ideally, the result is indistinguishable from the native resolution (or even looks better) and at the same time brings significantly increased frame rates.
Specifically, two neural networks interact with one another. The so-called »Generator Network« generates high-resolution content from the low-resolution images. The second network is called the “Discriminator Network” and functions as a control unit. It analyzes the images created by the first network and compares them with the template (images that are rendered with 64 samples per pixel). This continues until the results can no longer or can hardly be distinguished from the original.
Put simply, DLSS can create an image in 4K / UHD resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) in real time from an image in Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels). You can read about how well this works in practice in the following article:

Is Nvidia DLSS 2.0 a game changer?
What do we expect from DLSS in Battlefield 2042?
Depending on the selected mode, the DLSS implementation in Battlefield 2042 should, as usual, offer a significant performance boost and, in terms of image quality, can hardly be distinguished from the native resolution. We expect around 50 percent more images per second for the quality mode.
What is reflex
System latency is reduced with Nvidia Reflex. This means the signal transit time between the input device (e.g. mouse or keyboard), processing in the system and the output device (screen). The technology is particularly interesting for competitive games such as first-person shooters. Nvidia Reflex was already able to convince us in the GameStar test.
What do we expect from Reflex in Battlefield 2042?
We expect a reduction in system latency in the range of ten to a maximum of 30 percent, depending on the monitor and graphics card used. Whether this is noticeable in practice is another matter and depends heavily on your individual abilities. Nvidia Reflex is definitely a nice bonus.

Opinion on Battlefield 2042
Battlfield is not only well positioned when it comes to technology, as our column above shows. GameStar editor Philipp Elsner thinks that the series is generally on the right track with Battlefield 2042.
