DOOM Eternal Executive Producer Marty Stratton published a statement on the id Software Twitter account to confirm what many had suspected for months. The Invasion Mode promised since launch has been replaced by a new free Horde Mode coming in a future update.
Invasion Mode was going to be an addition to the main campaign where we could invade another player’s game or host an invader that we had to fight until there was only one left. As described, it was very similar to the invasions that Dark Souls popularized with the difference that the combat mechanics would be those of DOOM.
One novelty for another
Unfortunately, the producer has mentioned that the impact of the pandemic on his team has ended up delaying this addition so much that they no longer see sense of it.
“Remote work affected development progress or this addition. During this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the variety of games and combat available in the expansions and master levels. With these factors in mind, we decided to redirect our focus from invasion mode to creating an entirely new single-player horde mode. “
Stratton added that he is confident that this addition delivers what we expect. Additionally, he announced that the August Quakecon will reveal new game modes for DOOM Eternal’s BATTLEMODE that will be updated with a new map and a more competitive rank structure.
The community has reacted optimistically to the change, although hardly anyone hides the disappointment of not having the promised Invasion Mode. We hope that Horde Mode is a good substitute, although it is worth noting that DOOM Eternal is already one of the best shooters of recent years and that these modes are just the icing on a cake that everyone already liked.
