The most recent installment of the pay magazine of Retro gamer includes a section held the successful series Super Mario Bros., with statements from multiple developers about the importance of this fun Nintendo franchise in the industry.
In an advance offered by Radar Games, we can read the impact it had Super Mario Bros. in id Software, Ste pickford or Derek Yu, both as developers and fans.
You can read an excerpt below:
Jon Romero reveals how "the incredible control and the great amount of variety in the eight worlds" led id Software to present Nintendo with a conversion for PC from Super Mario Bros. 3, while Ste Pickford is so impressed with the mechanics that Mario 'jump on enemies to kill them', which tells us 'it bothers me when used in other games, since it feels like a unique feature of Mario, and one that you shouldn't copy'.
Derek Yu's Spelunky was inspired by the Super Mario series, and Derek revealed that “one thing I studied closely while working on Spelunky was the little touches in Mario's games: the 'poofs' that appear when Mario runs, the flashes that appear when you take a coin, etc. For me, a great reason why Mario is so nice are those frills that we are not always aware of, but we definitely feel when we play.
