In April 2020, we learned that WhatsApp was working on a new cross-device feature that would allow you to use your account from different mobiles and computers.
WhatsApp took over a year to bring it to light, mainly because it had to redesign how the app works to ensure that end-to-end encryption is always used.
If there are only two devices (the sender and the recipient) it’s easier, but syncing these encrypted messages across multiple devices (potentially both sender and recipient) means new systems have had to be created.
The company just released a public beta that anyone can try to see how this new feature that lets you use up to four devices works.
Although it is still necessary to have a mobile phone and to associate these additional devices with it, once you have configured your mobile, an internet connection will no longer be necessary and you will be able to continue sending and receiving messages even if your mobile is exhausted. battery or is off.
Before explaining how, you should know its limitations:
- You still cannot use more than one mobile with the same account at the same time.
- Real-time tracking is not visible on linked devices.
- Linked devices will not be able to communicate with others using “very old” versions of WhatsApp.
- You cannot call from WhatsApp Desktop to a linked device that is not part of the beta program.
This is therefore a test of the new version of WhatsApp Web, Desktop and Facebook Portal. It does not allow messages to be synchronized between mobiles, which can be disappointing. And we don’t know if that will be possible once the show goes public.
How to join the beta program on iPhone
1. In the WhatsApp application, tap on “Settings”.
2. Tap “Linked devices”.
3. Now tap on “Multi-Device Beta”, followed by the option to join the beta test, and follow the onscreen instructions.
How to test the beta on Android
1. In the WhatsApp app, tap “More options” (the three horizontal dots).
2. Tap “Linked devices”.
3. Now tap on “Multi-Device Beta”, followed by the option to join the beta test, and follow the instructions given to you.
If you don’t see the option for the multi-device function, you may not be using the latest version of WhatsApp. It may also not have arrived in your country yet. It is a global version, but it is not yet available everywhere.
