Valve’s brand new portable console was barely unveiled when big boss Gabe Newell spoke about an issue that must have fueled a lot of internal debate, namely the price of the Steam Deck.
The amount set for hardware is very often a time when manufacturers are pulling their hair out to offer a justified, attractive and competitive price while making money. Valve has decided to offer three models at three different prices that are tailored to different budgets.
Asked by IGN, Gabe Newell returned to the price of the Steam Deck, pointing out the need for Valve to take a very aggressive stance on the crowd, an argument he considers critical in the portable console space.
At the time of development, the price question was obviously on everyone’s lips, there Valve’s priority is to convince players to bring the Steam Deck and enjoy their entire library wherever they are. To stay competitive and attractive, Gabe Newell and his company weigh the pros and cons of certain devices before making their final choices.
The driving force behind this project, however, was primarily the gaming experience and the performance of the device offered by this mobile support.. The Valve teams therefore opted for an AMD Zen 2 processor and a GPU with AMD RDNA 2 architecture, components that can guarantee the performance of a robust gaming PC.
The combination of affordable price and solid performance is the result of hard worksaid Valve hardware director Shreya Liu. But another element comes into the equation: the quality of the machine and its workmanship. Because Valve wants to offer a high-end rendering in hand on this topic and not give up so easily.
Generally, Valve’s Steam Deck is part of a long-term strategy, from which the company wants to build an entire product category. Hence their desire to offer an aggressive price for their new machine.
While we wait for the official start, Gabe Newell says enthusiastically, just like Valve’s partners, the idea of developing in this area of portable consoles and offering PC gamers new opportunities.
