Free games or ‘free to play’ are not only in fashion. Thanks to monetization systems like microtransactions, battle passes, and loot boxes, they can be quite lucrative for studios. You just have to look at titles like Fortnite, Apex Legends Y Call of Duty: Warzone as examples. Because of this, there are many rumors that the popular Rainbow Six Siege will be the next game to go free.
These rumors are well founded. In early 2020, Director Leroy Athanassoff said the development team was interested in turning Rainbow Six Siege in a free game or ‘free to play’, but there were some obstacles to achieving it. Many considered this confirmation that Ubisoft was actively trying to make it happen.
But it seems that it will not be so. The publication PCGamesN recently interviewed Aurélien Chiron, associate director of Rainbow Six Siege, to talk about the state of the game.
During the dialogue, Chiron said that The team continues to look for ways to attract new players and keep the community interested, but there are no plans to convert Rainbow Six Siege in a ‘free to play’ game.
This is understandable, as the game continues to be extremely successful despite being paid and having been on the market for several years. Recently, during the Ubisoft Forward presentation at E3, a lot of new content was announced for the game and revealed information on the ‘spin-off’ Rainbow Six Extraction.
