In Orcs must die! 3, we introduced a new type of level that we call war scenarios. To better understand what these are, let’s start with how the idea of war scenarios came about. In an earlier one Orcs must die! The title we had was a scenario called The Wall. It looked great, and basically it was Orcs must die!‘s version of the invasion of Normandy Beach in World War II. However, it was missing two things: the ability to place traps on the battlefield outside the fortress, and we gave you a lot more orcs to kill. War scenarios were born here, at least on paper.
As a concept, war scenarios sound simple, but in practice it is a challenge to have hundreds of high quality art objects on screen, each with its own AI. It all started with a test level that we have now polished up and can be played at Orcs must die! 3 – The lava pits.
We knew we wanted the first war scenario to have an enemy entrance, and once orcs poured into the level we wanted you to feel like it couldn’t stop. Intimidation was the goal. However, if we were to intimidate you, we knew we had to provide you with the tools you need to defend the rift. This forced us to create a whole new set of traps that not only would be useful on the battlefield but were great enough to make you feel like you could handle any size army we threw at you to have. We made these tools mighty and great and called them machines of war.
The Mega Boom Barrel Launcher was our first war machine. For those of you who played the original Orcs must die!‘You may remember that we had a mountable ballista, but they didn’t fully achieve our goals. I think the Mega Boom Barrel Launcher brings that idea to bed. Not only is it one of the biggest traps in the game, but it also has a range that spans the entire battlefield. When the boom barrels land, they have a huge explosion radius that will make most enemies fly through the air. At first we were concerned that the trap was too powerful. Ultimately, we decided that since it is mountable, you need to decide how long to stay mounted and when to get out to stop enemies passing by.
Since the design department had a lot of ideas for War Machines, we had started a parallel discussion about creating more organic (ie non-mechanical) traps. Of course, we didn’t want to just play with organic traps indoors. War Machines would benefit from sharing this concept too, and one of the ideas we had was the Tornado in a Box. In early design discussions for this trap, it sounded almost impossible. We wanted the trap to take up a small amount of space and create a huge tornado at the same time. We wanted the tornado to move across the battlefield, picking up and throwing almost anything in its way. Tornado in a Box should have everything one Orcs must die! Fan loves in a trap – physics, crowd control and damage, all in one breathtaking event. Those goals were ambitious, but I think the programming and arts departments really delivered.
When playing war scenarios, you don’t just place mechanical and organic traps on the battlefield. You will also be placing AI characters that we have called War Guardians. The intent was to feel like putting other heroes on the battlefield to fight side by side with you. Not only do the War Guardians look impressive, they also have their own weapons, primary attacks, and custom secondary abilities. The knight charges the orc army with his huge broadsword to fight hand in hand, occasionally letting magical lightning swords rain down on him. Warguards are very healthy and can never die. They simply retreat to their base, kneel down, and magically heal over time so that they can re-enter the battle in full health. I don’t think it’s too much spoiler to say that War Guard weapons are also available for you to give you the same custom secondary ability.
These are just three of the 10+ war machines you can use in war scenarios. You will want to master them all if you want to take on the huge armies Orcs must die! 3 – Now available.
